BRIEF HISTORY OF

SHIPLAKE TENNIS AND SOCIAL CLUB

 

1929 Shiplake Tennis Club formed with 30 members. 2 grass courts and 1 pavilion at the current Shiplake Memorial Hall site. Subscription: 5/-.

First "Dance with Orchestra" attended by 59 people. Tickets: 3/6.

1942 Due to the War, playing activities were suspended.
1950 Shiplake Lawn Tennis club re-established.

21 adults (£1 10/-) and 11 juveniles (10/-).

1966 Club folded due to falling membership mainly because of poor condition of grass courts and bad weather.
1969 Shiplake Tennis & Social Club revived by a group of enthusiastic local tennis players with a fund-raising target of £1,800 to convert the grass courts into 2 hard courts.
1969-70 50 members temporarily using Shiplake College courts.
1971 2 hard courts constructed costing £2,160 funded by the Club’s general fund raising, members’ donations, Sport Council grant and "Friends of the Hall" loan which was paid back within 5 years.
1971-1996 Club membership continued to increase with playing and social events for adults and juniors provided throughout the year.
1996 3rd all weather court built at a cost of £19,973.
1999 Membership now 238 (159 adults & 79 juniors).

Annual "Dinner Dance with Live Band" celebrates 70th Anniversary of Club’s Foundation attended by 80 people. Tickets: £19.

2002 Membership: 343 (205 adults & 138 juniors) and waiting list. Full club programme involves competitive & social play, coaching throughout the year and social events.
2003 Application for new clubhouse approved.
2005 Clubhouse officially opened.
2006 www.Shiplaketc.org web site launched.
