Championship Rules

Entry

1. Entry must be made before the closing date. Entries made after the closing date will

be accepted if the draw has not been made and at the discretion of Competitions

Secretary.

2. For doubles competitions, in the event that an uneven number of entries are received,

the player remaining unpaired after the draw will be given the chance to find a partner

(not already in the draw) before the commencement date of the first match. In the

event that a partner cannot be found, this player can optionally elect to become a

reserve for any player who withdraws from their first match (preliminary or 1st round

– depending on the draw) in that competition, and the player’s first opponents shall be

given a bye. The reserve cannot enter the competition beyond the first round.

3. For all Doubles competitions, playing pairs shall be drawn at random.

4. Elementary seeding shall be used in the Men’s and Ladies Doubles and Singles

competitions. The Mixed and Veteran’s Mixed Doubles will not be seeded. All

seeding decisions will be made by the Competition Committee, whose decision on

seedings will be final.

5. The qualification age for the Veteran’s Mixed Doubles is 50.

6. All age restrictions apply to the player’s age on 1st April, 2007

7. Players may enter competitions above their age group (except the Veterans

competition!) at the discretion of the Competitions Committee. Players wishing to do

so should enter their name in the appropriate field in the entry form.

8. Players should not enter the competition if they are unable to play on Finals Day,

Sunday 16th September, 2007.

9. Each competition will run only if sufficient entries are received.

10. The closing date for entries is Saturday 10th March, 2007

11. The Competition Committee is formed from a subset of the Tennis Club Committee

Match Dates/Availability

1. ALL entrants are responsible for arranging matches (top and bottom named players

carry equal responsibility). Please don’t wait to be called – make the effort yourself.

2. If players have difficulty arranging a match they should contact the Competition

Committee via the Competitions Secretary.

3. Matches must be played by the completion date. Matches not complete by the date

will be given a further 1 week in which to be played. At the end of this time the

Competition Committee will decide on which player will be scratched. If one

player/pair has been predominantly unavailable they shall be scratched. Otherwise a

coin will be tossed to determine the outcome.

4. In the event that a player/pair becomes injured and is unable to complete their match

by the completion date, that player/pair will be scratched. With the exception of the

first matches in the Doubles events (where a reserve is identified), new or previously

knocked out players are not allowed to replace injured players.

will enter the spirit of the competition and exercise fairness in their line and other

calls.

4. In the event that a match cannot be finished, for example due to bad weather, and the

match cannot be resheduled before the completion date, then the player in the lead at

5. Match results should be e-mailed or phoned to the Competitions Secretary on

Finals Day

1. All Finals will be played on Finals Day. It would be appreciated if as many entrants

and other club members as possible attend on finals day, to provide support for the

Finalists and to make the day an event for all.

2. Finals Day will be on Sunday 16th September, 2007, starting at 10am.

3. The order of play for Finals Day will be posted no later than Thursday 6th September,

2007.

4. In the event that a finalist (singles) or one or both of a pair of finalists (doubles),

through unforeseen circumstances cannot attend on finals day, the losing semifinalist(

s) in their half of the draw will be given the chance to play the final in their

place and become champions or runners up in their own right. Players are requested

to give as much notice as possible in this instance. In the event that a player/pair

withdraw(s) at very short notice (leaving insufficient time to find an alternative

Shiplake Tennis and Social Club February 2007

opponent(s)) the player/pair withdrawing has the right to ask the remaining finalist(s)

to play on an alternative date. The remaining finalist(s) can choose to play later or

take the title by default.

5. Players (single or pairs) injured and unable to play on Finals Day will forfeit their

place in the competition and a replacement player(s) will be sought as above.

6. In the event that a pairing cannot be formed for a Final match, the remaining

player/pair win the match by default.

7. If no players or pairs are available, the winners shall be the finalist(s) who has/have

conceded the least games on their way to the final; the number shall be taken as the

average across played matches (i.e. excluding byes and walk overs) and shall exclude

the preliminary round if played. If the score is still even a coin will be tossed.

8. The U13’s, U11’s & U9’s Finals will be umpired

Complaints/Grievances

1. All complaints or grievances related to the championships should be made in writing

to the Tennis Club Committee, addressed to the Chairman.

Ladder Rules

Eligibility

1. Players of any standard are eligible to join the ladder corresponding to their age

group. Once a junior player reaches the ages of 9 or 11 they must move up to the next

most senior ladder.

2. Junior players may request to join a league above their age group and entry will be

granted at the discretion of the Competitions Committee.

Joining the Ladder

1. Players joining a Ladder after it is established will join at the bottom. A player may

request to attempt to join the Ladder at a higher level by challenging and beating 2

players at a higher level. In this case the new player will join the Ladder 1 place

above the higher of the 2 players.

2. Requests to join the Ladder after the initial set up should be addressed (by phone or email)

to the Competitions Secretary.

Challenges and movement in the Ladder

1. Challenges may be issued to any player on the Ladder (this provides an opportunity

for social/ad hoc play!)

2. Only challenges made between players who are within 4 places of each other (e.g.

between 14th and 10th places or 2nd and 6th places) will count towards a change in

position in the Ladder.

3. Challenge to a player higher up the ladder. A successful challenge up the ladder will

result in the Challenger moving to the place of the beaten Opponent. The beaten

Opponent and the players below the Opponent will move down the ladder

accordingly. If the Opponent (the challenged player) defeats a challenge the

Opponent will move up one position.

4. Challenge to a player lower down the ladder. If a player challenges a lower placed

player and loses, then the Opponent moves to the position of the Challenger and the

Challenger and other players below move down a place accordingly. If the Challenger

wins then the Challenger will move up one position. Note this rule has been included

to encourage those near the top of the table to keep playing and not “sit” on their

position.

5. For every successive period of 2 months in which a player plays no matches they will

be moved down 3 places in the Ladder.

6. Players may make or accept only one challenge at a time

7. The challenger should suggest 3 reasonable times for play to their Opponent. If the

Challenger and Opponent cannot find a suitable date within a period encompassing

the next 3 weekends from the date of the challenge, then the Challenger wins the

match by default. Tactical challenging against a player known to be unavailable is

not allowed!

8. The Challenger will provide balls (of good playing quality) for the match unless

otherwise agreed. Club balls are not to be used!

other matches shall be umpired by the players themselves. It is expected that

players will enter the spirit of the competition and exercise fairness in their line

and other calls.

Cancellation or abandonment of matches

1. In the event that a match cannot be finished, for example due to bad weather, and

the match cannot be rescheduled within the next week, then the player in the lead

at the time of abandonment shall be declared the winner. If the score is exactly

even, or only the warm up is complete, the match is abandoned and no result is

recorded. Players will be credited for play. In this instance a player can of course

issue a new challenge, with new availability dates.

2. If a pre-arranged match cannot be started due to poor weather conditions then

both players will be credited for play.

3. In the event that a player fails to turn up for a match or withdraws for any reason

before the match is played the remaining player will be given a walkover and be

credited for play.

4. Match results including the date of the match should be e-mailed or phoned

to the Competitions Secretary on completion and written on the Ladder
