The Under 18’s Mixed Doubles kicked off the Annual Club Championships’ Finals Morning with an early 8.30 am start, particularly for the teenagers!  Oli Sweeney and Katie Greenslade proved a winning combination with Oli’s superb groundstrokes and Katie’s sharp volleying ensuring a 6-2, 6-2 victory against David Willis and Claire Smith despite David’s great retrieval ability and Claire’s incredible speed around the court.
In the Under 9’s Singles, played as the best of three tie-breaks in the service boxes, Charlotte Wilson got off to a flying start winning the first tie-break 7-3 and having 2 match points in the second.  However, Henry Ellis then fought back to win that tie-break 8-6 and after some incredible rallies the final set 7-4.  It was a very close and impressive match with both players moving their opponent from one side of the court to the other and using a good combination of top spin and slice to control the ball.
The score line in the Ladies Doubles that followed implied a relatively easy win for Annabel Wilson and Clare Pelling (6-2,6-0).  However, in fact there were many games that went to deuce and included some amazingly unorthodox shots by Ana Bull that trick shot-specialist Bahrami would have been proud of, and amazing cross court forehands by Janette Verrall.
In the Under 13’s Girls Singles, Rebecca McQuater and Charlotte Kelly played a match full of long, intense and accurate ground stroke-dominated rallies finishing with a one set 6-4 victory for Charlotte, who was challenged strongly by Rebecca after having built a commanding 5-2 lead.  The Under 13’s Boys Singles between Oli Sweeney and Bertie Bull contained many excellent baseline rallies with  neat and accurate shots and, although Bertie lost Oli 0-6, he will be a great contender for this title for many years to come.  The Under 11’s Singles was closely contested over one set, by Dominic Ash and James Wilson. James finished the victor at 6-1, but the score line does not do justice to the closeness of many of their games and the skill and ingenuity displayed by both players.
In the Under 18’s Singles semi finals, George Pelling beat Claire Smith 6-1, 6-1 and now faces Will Greenslade in the Finals, which will be played shortly, together with the remaining 5 finals that still need to be completed.
